Celebrations and cake filled Harvey Leonard’s with joy on Monday night. So many of you came down to discuss James by Percival Everett (which was definitely a hit) and to mark six years of our collaboration with the best bar in the world. Big love to everyone who has made Book & Bottle such a joyous evening.

In April we’ll be reading The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley.

‘A civil servant is offered a lucrative job in a mysterious new government ministry gathering 'expats' from across history to test whether time-travel is feasible.

Her role is to work as a 'bridge': living with, supporting and monitoring expat 1847' - Commander Graham Gore, a former Victorian polar explorer. Gore, an adventurer by trade, soon adjusts to this bizarre new world of washing machines, feminism and Spotify; and during a long, sultry summer the pair move from awkwardness to friendship to something more.

But as the true shape of the project that brought them together begins to emerge, Gore and the bridge are forced to confront their past choices and imagined futures. Can love triumph over the histories that have shaped them? And how do you defy that history when it is living in your house?’

Happy World Book Day to all who celebrate - that’s everybody!

We’re over half way through a week of class visits from Dinting, Duke of Norfolk and Whitfield St James primary schools. It’s been wonderful welcoming such enthuastic and well-behaved children to the shop to spend their book tokens.

We’ve got plenty of copies of all the World Book Day books in stock so come on down to see us after school or at the weekend and bring your tokens! If this year’s books don’t appeal, you can use your token for £1 off any other children’s book.

Another splendid evening at Harvey Leonard’s on

Another splendid evening at Harvey Leonard’s on Monday for Book & Bottle. We pretty much unanimously loved The Painter’s Daughters by @thatemilyhowes. Beautifully written, easy to read, great characterisation and so descriptive. It was a sad story, and ahead of International Women’s Day it reminded us just how rubbish it has been to be a woman throughout most of history! If you didn’t read this one (or didn’t finish it), make sure you do, you won’t regret it!

For March we will be reading James by Percival Everett. Copies are now in store. Grab one and join us when we next meet on Monday 7th April.

We are delighted to welcome Patrick Joyce — one of Britain’s leading social historians, and Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Manchester — to the Victoria Hall, celebrating the paperback release of Remembering Peasants: a landmark history of the lost world of peasants and all it has to teach us.

Patrick will be discussing his work and answering audience questions followed by a signing.
